A Performance Exam is a comprehensive evaluation designed to detect potential sources of lameness or other performance-limiting issue impeding your horses’ natural ability to compete at its highest level of competition and live its most comfortable life. At Gold Coast Equine our new client performance exams may take upwards of two to four hours. Gathering the whole picture allows us to do more than just treat symptoms. We aim to get to the root of the issues and design a systematic plan for recovery and prevention of future injuries.
We also want you, the rider, to feel like you have the time to ask any questions you might have and for you to understand what is going on with your horse.
Our performance exams include:
-
Watching your horse move in hand and on a lunge line
-
Watching your horse move in dynamic, varied footing and with obstacles
-
Flexions
-
Watching your horse under saddle.
Please come prepared to ride as part of your soundness exam, and remember to bring your tack and appropriate riding attire.
Performance Exam
Our lameness evaluations provide a comprehensive assessment to pinpoint the source of your horse’s discomfort. During the exam, Dr. Myers observes the horse's movement at a walk, trot, and canter/lope both in circles and straight lines. When necessary or appropriate, horses may also be ridden or lunged in our arena for further assessment. To precisely identify areas of pain, we use regional nerve blocks and limb manipulation, helping us diagnose and create a targeted plan for effective treatment and rehabilitation.
Lameness Exam (Apparent Lameness)
A pre-purchase evaluation, or equine PPE, is an important step in the equine purchase process. At Gold Coast Equine we provide a comprehensive equine health analysis for equine sellers and buyers alike. Our Pre Purchase Exam includes the following elements:

Effective management of neck pain in horses begins with an accurate diagnosis. At Gold Coast Equine, Dr. Myers adopts a comprehensive, multi-step approach to address cervical pain in horses. This includes advanced imaging techniques, thorough physical examinations, and a variety of tailored treatment options designed to alleviate the complex symptoms associated with equine cervical pain.
Cervical (Neck) Diagnosis & Treatment
Gold Coast Equine specializes in the treatment of kissing spine, a condition where adjacent vertebrae impinge on each other, causing pain and affecting performance. Our targeted treatment options include diagnostic imaging, therapeutic injections, and custom exercise programs to alleviate discomfort and restore mobility. Our goal is to provide effective relief and long-term support, helping your horse return to peak health and performance.

Corticosteroid Injections
Steroid injections are a trusted option for managing joint inflammation and pain in sport horses. By delivering anti-inflammatory medication directly into affected joints, steroid injections help reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support recovery from training-related stress or injury. This targeted approach provides fast relief and enhances performance, allowing equine athletes to stay competitive and comfortable.
